What does a fence cost?
Use our fence price calculator to determine a budget for your next project!
Step1: Measure for your new fence
How do you get the linear footage?
There are a few ways to measure the total linear footage of your fence.
The first option is to use a free measuring app on your phone. If you have an iPhone, its a native app that you can use to measure. Otherwise, there should be apps available on the Google Play Store that will accomplish the same result.
Second option; use Google Earth from your computer and measure from satellite imagery. This is also a free option and is accessible via web browser.
Third option; walk the perimeter of where the new fence will go foot over foot manually. Walk the entire perimeter of the yard while keeping track of each step.
Fourth option (if replacing existing fence) ; which isn't as accurate but gives you a ballpark number. Count the number of panels. Panels are the boards between the posts. Typically the posts are 6 - 8' apart from each other max. Count up all the panels and multiply them by the distance apart they are from one another. So if you have 50 panels, multiple 50 x 6' and that's your total linear footage.
Alternatively you can use a tape measure, but that is the slowest and most difficult as fences are usually 100+ total feet so it would take a while.
Step2: Input measurements into price calculator

Understanding the Costs of a Fence Installation
Material & labor costs have BOTH gone up
Building material costs have gone up dramatically over the past year, and we also have to pay our contractors a higher rate due to inflation. Not only that, but the demand for home remodeling projects has literally gone through the roof. High demand, high labor costs, combined with high material costs has caused a strain on the market. Please be conscious of these factors for your next project.
Typical Costs to Expect:
Most average sized back yards are between 150-250 linear feet. Some larger sized yards are 300-400 linear feet.
For a typical sized back yard, costs vary based on the type of material. Here are some approximate project costs:
Average sized yard (150-250 linear feet total)
Black aluminum- $7,000 - $12,000
Cedar - $8,000 - $13,000
Vinyl - $9,000 - $14,000
Larger sized yard (250-400 linear feet total)
Black aluminum- $9,000 - $15,000
Cedar - $10,000 - $16,000
Vinyl - $11,000 - $17,000
Very large sized yard (400+ linear feet total)
Black aluminum- $15,000+
Cedar - $16,000+
Vinyl - $17,000+
Specialty composite fencing and custom colored vinyl are special order and are typically 50%-100% more in cost than traditional fencing materials.
